What to Use If Minoxidil Is Not for You
Not everyone is a candidate for minoxidil, and that's okay. Here's my dermatologist's guide to the ingredients and treatments with the strongest evidence for supporting fuller-looking hair.
By Dr. Joyce Park, MD, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Kerativ
Quick Answer
Minoxidil is the most studied over the counter option for hair loss, but some people may not be ready to start it or choose not to use it and are searching for alternatives. Kopexil, Redensyl, pumpkin seed oil, caffeine and saw palmetto all have clinical data behind them, and several of them also support the scalp itself, which minoxidil was never designed to do.

No. 1
Kopexil
Also known as Aminexil in Europe, Kopexil is a chemical cousin to minoxidil that works through a completely different pathway. Rather than acting on blood flow, it helps support the flexibility of the collagen surrounding the hair root, and that flexibility is part of what keeps hairs anchored where they belong.

No. 2
Redensyl
A patented ingredient developed for hair thinning, Redensyl acts on the follicle's own growth signaling by helping to wake up stem cells. Think of it as supporting the follicle's ability to stay in the growth phase longer instead of resting or shedding prematurely.

No. 3
Pumpkin Seed Oil
Pumpkin seed oil is rich in plant compounds called phytosterols that have been studied for their role in supporting healthy hair follicles. It also delivers antioxidants and essential fatty acids that help create a healthier environment for hair to thrive.

Caffeine
Caffeine does more than wake you up. When applied to the scalp, it has been shown to penetrate the hair follicle where it may help energize follicle cells and support healthy hair growth cycles.

Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is a plant extract studied for its potential to reduce the effects of DHT, one of the hormones involved in pattern hair loss.

What I Tell My Patients
I want to be straightforward with you, because the internet often is not: none of these ingredients is minoxidil, which remains the most evidence-backed FDA-approved option for hair growth. What I see in clinic is that plenty of people either cannot use it, or tried it and could not stand the texture, quit during the early shedding phase, struggle with compliance, or are simply not ready for a medication. Minoxidil also does not address scalp skin health; it is a medication designed for hair. If any of these circumstances apply to you, then this list is for you. I would rather you use a well-formulated, clinically tested regimen every day for a year than use minoxidil for 3 weeks and give up.

Saw Palmetto
What it is: A natural botanical extract from the berries of the saw palmetto plant.
Why we love it: Supports a visible reduction in hair thinning while promoting stronger, fuller-looking strands.

The Rest of the Formula
The Redensify Regimen also includes Adenosine, Velvet Flower Seed Extract, Panthenol, Ectoin, Adapinoid, Chlorella Prebiotic and Zinc PCA, most of them combined in our proprietary TrichoCore Complex. Side by Side
Minoxidil vs. The Kerativ Redensify Regimen
Minoxidil remains the most studied over-the-counter medication for hair loss. Kerativ was designed with a different philosophy: a cosmetic, dermatologist-formulated regimen that supports the scalp and hair follicle with multiple complementary ingredients. You can choose one or use both together. If you are still working out which pattern you are dealing with, start with male pattern hair loss or female pattern thinning.
| Comparison | Minoxidil | Kerativ Redensify Regimen |
|---|---|---|
| Formula philosophy | Single active medication with one primary mechanism for hair growth | Dermatologist-formulated regimen combining complementary ingredients that support scalp health and fuller-looking hair through multiple pathways |
| Primary Benefit | Targets hair follicles | Supports both the scalp and hair environment |
| Application | Foam or solution applied with fingers or a dropper | Precise needle-nose applicator designed for quick, targeted application with no mess |
| Texture | Liquid or foam that takes time to absorb into the scalp | Lightweight, facial-serum inspired formula that absorbs within seconds |
| Residue | May leave a residue on the scalp or hair depending on the formulation | Designed to disappear into the scalp so you can apply and style as usual |
| Who may choose it | Those seeking an FDA-approved medication for hair loss | Those looking for a science-backed routine that fits easily into everyday haircare |
Kerativ products are cosmetics and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Individual results may vary. *Based on a 24-week clinical study with 32 participants, dermatologist-evaluated. Results may vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use minoxidil and the Redensify Regimen together?
Yes, and this is actually how I use them with a lot of my patients. Minoxidil works on the follicle, and the Redensify Regimen works on the scalp environment that follicle sits in, so there is no mechanistic reason the two would interfere with each other. If you are using both, apply your minoxidil first, let it dry fully, then apply the Redensify Treatment Serum on top, and use the Redensify Reset Shampoo on your wash days so the scalp underneath everything stays comfortable and balanced. One caveat: if your scalp is already irritated or flaking from minoxidil, address that before you add anything else on top of it.
Are minoxidil alternatives as effective as minoxidil?
That depends entirely on what you are asking them to do, and I think the honest answer serves you better than a comfortable one. Minoxidil is a drug with decades of data behind it for hair growth; you would be hard pressed to find a cosmetic ingredient with the same wealth of data behind it. What these ingredients do have, however, is real clinical data of their own, formulated in elegant textures and easy to use packaging, and something minoxidil does not offer, which is benefit to the scalp skin itself. So I would reframe the question. Not which one is stronger, but which one you will actually use every day for 6 months, because a treatment you abandon in week 3 has an effectiveness of zero. And to repeat what I said earlier: you can also pair minoxidil alternatives with minoxidil as well.
Why does my hair shed more when I first start minoxidil?
This is the single most common reason I see people give up on it, and it is worth understanding before you start so that it does not catch you off guard. Minoxidil works partly by pushing resting follicles back into the growth phase, and for a new hair to come in, the old resting hair sitting in that follicle has to be released first. For roughly the first 2 to 8 weeks you can shed noticeably more than you did before. It is a sign the medication is doing something, not a sign it is damaging your hair. If the shedding is still increasing past about 3 months, bring that to a dermatologist, because at that point something else may be going on.
If I am not using minoxidil, what should I look for in a scalp serum instead?
I would look for three things, and I would be fairly strict about all three. First, named actives sitting at a meaningful position on the ingredient list, rather than a long botanical list where everything of interest falls below the fragrance. Second, evidence for the formula as a whole, rather than only on specific actives or for the category in general. If a clinical study exists, whether that's consumer surveys, before and after photography, or actually having progress evaluated by a dermatologist, all the better! Robust data helps you separate true efficacy from marketing fluff. And third, a texture you would genuinely be willing to put on your scalp every day, because that is the variable that quietly decides whether any of this works. If a serum meets all three, you have found a good one!
How long until I see results from the Redensify Regimen?
Give it 3 months before you form an opinion and 6 before you make a final judgment, because that is honestly how the hair cycle moves and no serum can outrun it. In our 24-week clinical study of the Redensify Treatment Serum, dermatologist evaluation showed increases in hair density and volume at 3 months, and hair thickness at 6.* What that means practically is that the earliest changes are ones you feel more than see, less shedding in the shower and a scalp that feels more comfortable, and the visible density change arrives after that. Consistency is the part that matters!
